Why WebP beats PNG for delivery
PNG's job is exact pixel preservation, and it pays for that with size — especially on images with many colors or subtle gradients. WebP offers both a lossless mode that typically undercuts PNG at identical pixels and a lossy mode that shrinks files dramatically for content that tolerates it.
Alpha transparency, PNG's signature feature, carries over: logos, badges, and cutouts keep their clean edges on any background. Every current browser renders WebP, so the fallback gymnastics of earlier years are no longer required for most audiences.
What to expect from the result
Typical interface graphics and screenshots convert to a fraction of their PNG size. Photographic PNGs — images that never should have been PNG in the first place — often shrink the most of all.
The result view reports the exact byte change for every file, and if a conversion ever produces a larger file, the number is shown as an increase rather than dressed up as a saving. You decide whether the trade is worth shipping.
Where to keep PNG
Keep a PNG master if the image will be edited again, since repeated lossy re-encoding compounds. Some legacy tools, email clients, and upload forms still expect PNG specifically. For everything user-facing on the web, WebP is the safer default in 2026 — convert here in batches of up to 50 files, and everything is deleted after two hours.
