What makes AVIF different

AVIF is built on the AV1 video codec and typically beats JPEG and WebP on file size at comparable visual quality, especially for photographs and smooth gradients. It supports transparency, wide color gamut, and HDR, which older formats handle poorly or not at all.

The trade-off is encode cost: producing a well-compressed AVIF takes more processing time than a JPEG, which is why many pipelines export quickly at conservative settings and leave savings on the table. Recompressing those files with a tuned encoder recovers that margin.

Choosing a compression mode for AVIF

Balanced is the sensible default: it aims for a clearly smaller file while keeping artifacts below the level most viewers notice at normal display sizes. Best quality spends more bytes to preserve fine texture — use it for hero images and photography portfolios.

AVIF is one of the formats where Tinify offers true Lossless mode, alongside PNG, WebP, and GIF. Lossless AVIF preserves every pixel exactly, at the cost of a much larger file than lossy AVIF. Reserve it for archival masters, not for delivery.

When the result cannot get smaller

A file that was already compressed aggressively may not shrink further. When a compression pass would make an AVIF larger, Tinify returns your original file and labels the result as not optimized instead of reporting a fake saving. You only learn something real either way.

Practical AVIF workflow

Resize the image to its largest real display size before compressing — pixels the layout never shows are the most expensive kind of waste. Then compress with Balanced, inspect important details at 100% zoom, and step up to Best quality only where you can see the difference.

Because some browsers and tools still lack AVIF support, serve it through the picture element with a WebP or JPEG fallback. Batches of up to 50 files run in parallel here, and everything is permanently deleted after two hours.

Frequently asked questions

Does compressing AVIF again reduce quality?

Lossy recompression re-encodes the image, so some information is discarded. At Balanced settings the visible difference is usually negligible while the size drop is real. Use Lossless mode if every pixel must survive unchanged.

Is lossless compression available for AVIF?

Yes. AVIF, PNG, WebP, and GIF are the formats where Tinify offers true lossless mode. Expect lossless AVIF files to be much larger than lossy ones.
